Tuesday 1st Week of the Year

Mark 1:21-28

“What is this?
A new teaching with authority.
He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.”

We are grateful that the Lord handed down that authority
to the People of God through the Sacrament of Holy Order.

We know that it is Jesus who consecrates the host into His Body.

We know it is Jesus who absolves sin through the preist in Confession.

Likewise, it is Jesus who drives out demons from someone possessed
in the Rite of Exorcism through His priest.

You might be wondering how this passage applies to
the person in the pew.

They haven’t been given the authority to perform an exorcism.

So how can such a person relate to this passage?

Possession by demons is not the only way that people are dehumanized.

Open a newspaper or watch a newscast
and you will see many, many ways that people are abused.

As with the exorcism we say, what can we do?

I am only one person.

There is plenty that we can do.

Every day we find ourselves in situations
where we can avoid abusive behavior.

Not taking part in gossip, choosing to forgive and not retaliate,
avoiding the temptation to judge someone
all share in Jesus ministry of exorcism.

Let us ask the Lord to help us eradicate evil
in situations we find ourselves in before it ever starts.
