Today’s Mass Readings

Tuesday of Holy Week 2017

John 13:21-33.

Have you ever wondered how Judas got to the point
where he could betray Jesus and have him arrested?

How does a person’s heart becomes so dark
that they don’t care what happens to another person?

Judas lived with Jesus every day
listening to him, seeing his miracles
and he allowed none of it to penetrate his heart and soul.

Here he is in the Divine Presence of someone
who loved him with a perfect love
and whose affection for Judas never wavered –
no matter what he did or didn’t do.

He didn’t hear Jesus first words
when he began his ministry,
“Repent and believe the good news.”

How many times Jesus called people to repentance
as he traveled from village to village?

Just like us, he was called every day to repent
of the little faults that hurt his relationship with Jesus
and other people.

And he never did repent.

It’s as if Jesus is saying to him and us,
“You will stumble if you don’t repent
and your fall will be too great for you to pick yourself up.”

And so it was that he didn’t recognize
Jesus’ love and affection in small things.

And at the Last Supper he refused
the last invitation to enter and live in Jesus’ heart.
But Peter did repent.

After denying Jesus three times
he felt the full force of losing Jesus so much
that he embraced the darkness in his heart
and cried till he could cry no more.

How important is frequent confession?

How important it is to acknowledge our sinfulness,
no matter how small they may seem to be?

How important it is to never make an excuse
for how we’ve hurt Jesus, especially in others?

Jesus offers us today – Judas or Peter.

Who have we been in the past?

Who will we be in the future?
