Thursday 1st Week of Advent.
Matthew 7:21, 24-27
Both hearing and doing brings the Word of God to life.
So how is the construction of our life going?
Looking back on how we have lived our lives,
is the foundation built on rock or sand?
We couldn’t begin to list the number of times
we’ve heard God’s Good Word in the Holy Mass
and the quiet of our hearts.
Every day the Lord speaks a Word of life
in our hearts where we love him most.
It takes some effort on our part
to listen to him speak that Word.
I know I can’t just hear it once
and hope to get anything out of it.
I have to purposely sit down
and quiet my mind in his Presence.
I make myself listen by reading a passage
a number of times until a word or a line stands out.
I repeat that word over and over quietly
and gently, allowing the Holy Spirit
to bring to mind anything he wants
to make known to me.
That part is the listening.
The doing involves resolutions that I make
about what’s going to be different today
and from now on because of that Word.
So if the word is mercy,
and the Lord brings to mind someone
I need to forgive or ask forgiveness,
I resolve to do this as soon as possible.
This distinguishes between hearing God’s Word
and doing God’s Word,
between building my life on a rock or sand.
How much the Lord wants us to build the house
that he resides in every day on Rock?
Jesus is that Rock.
Both hearing and doing
brings the Word of God to life.
