St. Joseph, Spouse of Mary

Today’s Mass Readings

St. Joseph, Spouse of Mary
Matthew 1:18-25

St. Joseph had great peace in taking her as his wife
under very difficult circumstances.

St. Joseph places a tremendous trust in God when he took Mary to be his wife.
Being right in our relationships
with God and each other
gives us a great sense of peace
when we have to make a difficult decision.
We see this especially in St. Joseph,
the spouse of Mother Mary.

Think of God working in the heart of St. Joseph.
By God’s own law,
Mary found with child,
not by her betrothed husband
should be put to death by him.
But the Gospel says that he was a just man
and something greater than justice was working in his heart.

It was his righteousness, his clean heart,
not justice that caused him to lay down the stone
and welcome Mary into the home of his heart.

Such purity of heart changes everything.

Instead of suspecting Mary of evil
and condemning her to death,
he now holds her with the greatest reverence in his heart.
Jesus is born;
God becomes flesh when justice kneels down in homage
to the presence of Christ in our hearts.
He was in the heart of Joseph
even before he was born of Mary.

We say that St. Joseph was a just man.
Because of his healthy relationship with the Lord
and his bride to be, mother Mary,
St. Joseph had great peace in taking her as his wife
under very difficult circumstances.

Before we make an important decision about our life
let’s make sure we are right with God
and with the significant people in our lives.
