Today’s Mass Readings

Monday 5th Week of Easter 2017

John 14:21-26.

Like a breath of fresh air, the Holy Spirit renews the risen life of Jesus in us, constantly.

Would everyone please just breathe in a breath of fresh air
and then exhale.

As we know, tiny little blood vessels
carry that oxygen to our hearts
where it is pumped to the mind and the rest of the body.

If we cut ourselves but the cut doesn’t need stitches
we are told to let air get to it
which helps the wound to close as the blood clots.
The same word, ‘pneuma” or “breath of God”
is used to describe the Holy Spirit.

He is the breath of life of God the Father and the Son.

God the Father breathed over the chaos
and brought order to all creation.
This was the power of the Most High
that overshadowed mother Mary
and conceived Jesus in her womb.

Jesus received the Holy Spirit at his baptism
changing his role from living a private life
to proclaiming the Good News in word and deed.

At Pentecost, the same Spirit drove out the disciples fear
and they too became proclaimers
of Jesus crucified and risen from the dead
to all peoples in all situations.

The revelation of God the Father in Jesus
cannot be kept to ourselves.

As with creation, Jesus and the disciples,
we welcome his Breath of risen life
in all our dealings with others.

Whether praying alone, reading Scripture
or dealing with other people,
this is the holy Breath of God’s life.
If we are too timid to proclaim God’s Good News
this holy Breath will make us bold.

Like a breath of fresh air,
the Holy Spirit renews
the risen life of Jesus in us, constantly.

Welcoming the Holy Spirit
is as easy as taking in a breath of fresh air,
a Breath of Jesus’ risen life.
