Feast of Saints Philip and James

Today’s Readings

Feast of Saints Philip and James
May 3

John 14:6-14

A kind word, opening a door, offering forgiveness by looking past the hurt that someone does to us, all these and hundreds of other ways reveal through us who Jesus is and who his Father is to the world.

“I am reminding you, brothers and sisters
of the gospel I preached to you,
which you indeed received
and in which you also stand.”

Each one of the apostles was a walking gospel.

Jesus told Philip in the gospel
that to have seen him is to have seen his Father.

Jesus didn’t just hand down a teaching
or an example to follow.

He revealed his Father in every word he spoke
and every deed he performed.

This was his work which he spoke about,
to reveal his Father.

The disciples received this revelation
that Jesus preached and everything he said and did.

And in no less of a way
did the twelve apostles do the same
as Paul stated, “The gospel I preached to you.”

We’ve heard a number of times
that we preach not just by words
but by our lives and the values that shape how we live.

But more, we let others see
what the God the Father and Jesus his Son are like
by loving people in ordinary, everyday events.

A kind word, opening a door, offering forgiveness
by looking past the hurt that someone does to us,
all these and hundreds of other ways
reveal through us who Jesus is
and who his Father is to the world.

Let’s recommit our faith and love for Jesus
so that all we do today and all the words we use
will continue the work of revealing his Father to the world.

St. Philip, St. James, pray for us.
